Kopdit Sangosay arose from an initiative taken by the Pimpinan Yayasan Persekolahan Umat Katolik Ngada (Yasukda). They were gravely concerned at the situation of teachers and their families who were crippled by the high interest rates charged by money lenders for loans for the education of their children, housing costs, and the expense of health treatment. Initially a study savings group was formed, Kelompok Studi Tabung (KST). Its vision - to become an institute of trustworthy and strong financial service activity based on its members.

It commenced in 1976 with 21 members and Rp.30.000 and in 1982 became Kopdit Sangosay with a membership of 67 and Rp.3.800.000 capital. Government legal body status followed with reg no 515/X1V/1988. Kopdit Sangosay has its main office in Bajawa covering the sub provinces of Ngada, Nagekeo and Manggarai. In November 2005 a sub branch was opened in Mbay, capital of Nagekeo.

This Credit Union gives its members and the public in general an aim in life - to have dignity and become prosperous. On this basis the self-supporting peripatetic Credit Union for Saving and Lending has a variety of deposit products on the market. Kopdit Sangosay encourages saving (it must become a requirement or even a life style). Our efforts to awaken a culture of saving to replace living day to day, have been made through education towards change.

Blessed by the hard work of all involved, by 31 December 2007, Kopdit Sangosay had assets Rp.42.174.154.443 mostly stemming from Simpanan Non Saham Rp.30.238.021.905 and Modal Sendiri Rp.6.608.346.482 with 5,838 members. Membership consists of teachers and public employees(49%) and the other 51% is made up of farmers, middle and small entrepreneurs, private sector managers, fishermen, drivers and others.

This Kopdit has also developed a program of microfinance for rural areas and offers the following products: Sibudi (long term investment) as preparation for the expense of children’s school and college education; Sipintar (student deposit) to encourage children to save from an early age; Siharta (deposit account); Simapan (investment account) saving for old age; and Sibhuar (current account) and Sisuka (deposit account) for expenses relating to basic necessities. The increasing membership has created a demand for new services, hence Kopdit Sangosay has opened sub branchs and service points in the sub provinces of Ngada, Nagekeo and Manggarai.
