Kopdit Kenisa in the Ngada District was started on 1 September 1986. This credit union is situated in the central district and emphasises the importance of solidarity, self support, and education for its members.

An initiative by the Government Officer of the Mauponggo District, together with local leaders, the purpose of the credit union was to overcome local public employees economic difficulty. There was a lack of access to financial institutions so borrowing money to cover the expenses related to educating children at higher level and family healthcare was difficult. Kopdit Kenisa then opened its doors to everyone who wanted to be part of the Credit Union and was given Government Legal Status registration no 28/BH/KWK.24/V1/1996. Membership as at December 2007 was 1,606 around 72% of whom were farmers and it owned assets of RP.6.37 billion.

The Credit Union added benefit to the community by opening a microfinance programme in 2005. This has enabled the farmers to get funds to purchase hand tractors, paddy milling machines, fertilizer and drugs; the fishermen to get funds to buy boats, engines, and water taxis; and the wives of the market traders to get funds so that they and their mothers can increase the production of traditional weaving to sell in the market.

From a population of 19,000 spread over 20 rural areas of the Mauponggo district, 5% have become members of the Credit Union. Kopdit Kenisa has a target of increasing its membership by 10% a year. This number will continue to increase because we continue to actively motivate and promote the Credit Union in the countryside.
