 Kopdit Bowae was formed following an invitation in 1973 to Father Andreas Seda Wea, leader of the Farming School, to attend a jointly run workshop in Ledalero with the Social Development Commission of the Catholic Church of the Arch Diocese of Ende (Delsos). One of the fundamental problems was how to set up a savings group. Father Bernadus Back,SVD with Delsos, invited Tim Pelatih from Jakarta and Semarang to do credit union training from elementary courses up to book-keeping and auditing. Father Andreas Seda Wea, having benefited from that training, and identifying strongly with the poverty of the people, continually promoted the idea of a credit union. He was helped in his efforts by Father Clemens Cletus da Cunha,SVD, Aloysius Muga BA, and Stefanus Dua and on the 1 April 1974 Kopdit Bowae was formed with a membership of 63.
Kpodit Boawae’s motto is “You help me in my need, I help you in yours”. To this end various saving products have been opened. Sibuhar(current account); Sisuka(deposit account; Sidandik(education fund savings); Siharta (day savings stripper) and Simapan(investment savings for future needs). The new Simapan product is a very popular one with farmers as it helps them to save for a pension in their old age. |

The Kopdit is situated in a rural region and, as more and more people became interested in joining the credit union, successfully recruited members, 80% of which are farmers. The reason for this growth was the difficulty people living in rural areas had in gaining access to finance companies. It expanded even more rapidly following the adoption of the Kopdit Model from Puskopdit Bekatigade Ende- Ngada and Canadian Co-operative Association Canada.
